Mobile's First SketchCrawl - October 17 - Downtown

Five years after Pixar artist Enrico Casarosa hosted the first-ever SketchCrawl in San Francisco, Mobile is set to join what has become a worldwide day of drawing. Mobile SketchCrawl will take place on Saturday, October 17, starting at Mobile Arts Council's offices at 318 Dauphin Street.

SketchCrawl updates will appear on this blog, and photos from our first SketchCrawl will be posted here. Future Mobile SketchCrawls will be announced here, as well. So please stop by often.

What's a SketchCrawl?

A worldwide drawing marathon for all ages and levels of art experience. People in 90 cities around the globe now participate in SketchCrawl events, and many of them have posted their drawings in the online forum at http://www.sketchcrawl.com/.

What happens at Mobile SketchCrawl?

It's our very own hometown drawing marathon. You'll see your city in a whole new way! Mobile's first SketchCrawl was in October 2009, and took place in and around Cathedral Square. Sixteen sketchers, ranging in age from 11 to 51, drew their way up and down Dauphin Street and beyond. Mobile SketchCrawl 2, slated to happen simultaneously with similar events all over the globe, is slated for Saturday, Feb. 27, at Mobile Museum of Art.

What should I bring?

It's usually best to keep it simple when you're drawing on the move. A pencil, your favorite ink pen, a sturdy sketchbook... bring a small set of watercolors or colored pencils, if you like.

How much does it cost?

SketchCrawl is free.

What if it rains?

No problem! There are plenty of indoor drawing opportunities in the galleries, lobby and education wing at MMA. Volunteers at MAC will be able to suggest good wet-weather sketching spots.

Can I volunteer to help during SketchCrawl?
